Transport Research Laboratory

TRL is a fully independent company limited by guarantee. It is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the fields of transportation, transport infrastructure, safety and the environment. TRL has worked closely with clients in the public and private sectors of the UK and worldwide. The company provides research based consultancy and technical help which enables clients to obtain improved value for money, generate competitive advantage and gain a better understanding of transport issues.

TRL currently employs approximately 540 full time staff, 350 of whom are technical specialists with a wide range of professional disciplines. The majority of the staff is employed in the UK at our offices in Crowthorne, Berkshire and Edinburgh in Scotland. A small number of staff is based overseas.

TRL's Noise and Vibration Group is internationally recognised as a centre for research on transportation noise assessment.

TRL developed the UK prediction model Calculation of Road Traffic Noise (CRTN) and Calculation of Railway Noise (CRN) and were involved in its validation. TRL also developed the statistical pass-by method which has now been adopted as an ISO standard. Research in the area of tyre-road surface noise has led to the development of a close proximity test vehicle TRITON which can travel at motorway speeds and is being used to examine the factors and mechanisms involved in the noise generation process. Extensive research has been carried out applying numerical modelling techniques to a wide range of propagation problems, including cuttings, embankments, porous road surfaces and the combined effect of barriers and porous road surfaces.

TRL has recently provided recommendations to the European Commission on the selection of interim noise prediction models for the prediction of road traffic and railway noise.
