Description of the Work Package
The EU Directive 2002/49/EC requires the production of strategic noise maps for large agglomerations. All major noise sources such as road and railway traffic, airports and industrial activities need to be included in the noise mapping. Methods for the prediction of community noise levels due to road and railway traffic are being developed in the Harmonoise project. In the IMAGINE project research is done on a wider scope of noise sources. The methods developed in Harmonoise will be adopted to develop methods for aircraft and industrial noise. Work Package 7 (WP7) of the IMAGINE project deals with the industrial noise sources.
The sources regarded as industrial noise vary from large industrial sites to small workshops right in the middle of the city center. In order to make noise maps of large agglomerations, both stationary noise sources as well as sound sources representing industrial activities will be considered.
Therefore WP7 "Industrial noise" will do the following
- investigate measurement methods for industrial sources, based on the existing standards and guidelines, and point out which ones are suitable for noise mapping purposes;
- set up a database for a limited but representative number of industrial noise sources and noise emitting activities;
- extend the method for calculating noise propagation, as developed in the Harmonoise project, to go well with industrial situations and noise source definitions (point sources, area sources, elevated sources, lateral diffraction, etc.);
- validation and integration of the above topics.
The result will be an accepted and reliable method for the production of noise maps for large agglomerations, showing the environmental noise levels due to industrial noise sources. The method developed in the IMAGINE project will link well with the methods for the description of noise propagation as developed in the Harmonoise project.

Database for Industrial noise sources
A version of the database for industrial noise can be applied for by completing this form.
For a description of the database download the attached document
A database for industrial noise sources supplies data for the cases in the IMAGINE method where measurement results cannot be used. Workpackage 7 is busy with gathering data to fill the database. The sources range from very specific individual noise sources (like a fork lift truck, for example) to sound power levels for types of industry as a whole. Next to this data, equations can be found that can be used to predict sound power levels based on power consumption, rpm, etc. A small computer program will help the end user to find the right data.
