Leicester City Council

The Area Traffic Control Group manages and maintains the traffic signal network throughout Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. This includes 429 sets of traffic lights in Leicester, and 730 sets of lights in Leicestershire.

Using sophisticated IT systems, traffic flow and signal timing design are constantly refined to optimise the efficiency of the flow of traffic and to ensure proper provision of crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

Significant European Commission linked research is carried out, particularly in the field of air pollution, so that traffic management and policy can take into account the effects traffic has on the quality of people's health in Leicester.

The main road network is monitored by CCTV cameras which gives a real time picture of the traffic situation in and outside the city.

The service also provides regular live broadcasts on Radio Leicester of the local traffic and transport situation.
